Bringing The Bluegrass Into Focus

LEXINGTON, Ky. – One rarely encounters Kentucky without thinking of its most prized home-grown products: the majestic horses that dot its rolling hills.

Famous for its horse races, shows, parks, and farms, Kentucky is finally getting its chance to shine as the horse capital of the world in the international arena, hosting the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington.

In a relatively short period of time, Kentucky will be the center of equestrian activity, drawing spectators, horse owners, and horses from around the world.

As one of the largest equestrian events in the world, the Games will bring immense media attention to the region and renew local interest in the horses which are so essential to both Kentucky’s economy and culture. Therefore, it is only fitting that award-winning photographer James Archambeault should document the horse in all its beauty in his new book “Kentucky Horse Country: Images of the Bluegrass”.

As an experienced horse photographer, Archambeault immediately catches readers’ attention with his colorful collection of photos depicting many aspects of the horse industry, from racing to dressage, from jumping circuits to horses meandering along the picturesque countryside.

The photographs portray horses of all breeds and provide an intimate look into the beating heart of horse country as it functions from day to day. Archambeault’s lens captures the Kentucky landscape in all its splendor, exhibiting the land’s magnificence and diversity as it changes with the seasons. The book also contains rare photographs of some of the greatest racing horses of all time, including Secretariat, Affirmed, Charismatic, Seattle Slew, Cigar, and many others. More.

Stepping Out in Style

The true “blue bloods” of Kentucky have four legs not two. Kentucky is known world-wide for our horses and while most may automatically think of thoroughbreds, the American Saddlebred is the only breed of horse that originated in the Commonwealth. The Showplace for Saddlebreds at the Kentucky Horse Park spotlights the historical legacy of the breed and will open a new exhibit this year “This Is The American Saddlebred.”  More.

‘Greening’ the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

When the world comes to Kentucky next September, we want to put our greenest foot forward.

That’s according to Carol Hanley, director of engagement in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability & the Environment.

Hanley said to accomplish that, the Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community is working with the Kentucky Horse Park and the FEI World Equestrian Games team to implement green projects, such as recycling, sustainability measures in hotels and restaurants, and introducing native plant species at the Horse Park.

“Our European visitors have a different standard of sustainability and we want to make a good impression and welcome them to the Bluegrass State,” Hanley said.

Green Friends of the Games is a fundraising initiative that will give Kentuckians the opportunity to help make the 2010 Games greener and reduce their environmental impact. It aims to fund green projects that include, among others, permanent recycling centers to promote recycling at the event and smaller portable recycling stations. Green Friends of the Games is also engaged in planting native species and gardens along Cane Run Creek, which runs through the Kentucky Horse Park. The Bluegrass partnership hopes to fund other projects through the Green Friends Program. Benches, sculptures, gardens, and bike racks along the Legacy Trail, running from downtown Lexington to the Kentucky Horse Park, are under consideration, as are biofuels as fuel for visitor transportation, and green power might also be purchased. There are local food, education, and hospitality initiatives and green events for Spotlight Lexington, a festival to be held downtown during the Games. Spotlight Lexington will consist of entertainment, cultural, and artistic activities. More.

WEG partners with Breyer model horses

Let the games’ merchandising begin: Breyer, modeler of all things small and horsey, has signed on as a sponsor of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Fans of the model horses can look for “Esprit,” commissioned from sculptor Kathleen Moody “to symbolize the spirit of the horses competing in eight different disciplines” at WEG, according to a news release.

Breyer also plans to release collectibles based on the different equestrian sports, including a reining model and a dressage model, tied to WEG. The games are coming to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington from Sept. 25 to Oct. 10.

And in case the kids can’t get enough of horses real and plastic while they are at the games, Breyer is setting up an interactive play area “using Breyer’s realistic model horses and pint-sized jumps for children,” according to the announcement. More.

World Equestrian Games: Traffic concerns

For many in Lexington, the biggest issue about the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is more mundane than beautiful horses and world-class athletes. It’s about traffic, and exactly how much there will be between Sept. 25 and Oct. 10, 2010.

The answer comes from Jim Downs, a traffic expert from Gameday Management Group, the Orlando, Fla., company that has managed traffic for the past 10 Super Bowls:

“Your life will be affected,” he says. “My job is to minimize it.” More.
