An interview with Nancy Turner…
As a tourism professional, how do you describe the opportunity the Games present?
It provideAs a tourism professional, how do you describe the opportunity the Games present?
It provides us with the opportunity to showcase the beauty and heritage of the Bluegrass Region and the Commonwealth, not only to those attending the games but the media who will be here to cover the events.
How can Winchester benefit from this opportunity? The proximity of Winchester and Clark County to the Horse Park and Lexington will be a great benefit in recruiting hotel stays, restaurant visits, and daytrips for those who looking for fun things to do outside of the Horse Park facilities. More importantly we are trying to determine what improvements we can make to our community that will benefit us long after 2010.
When did you start your planning? We started planning a couple of years ago, but in all honesty we have backed off the planning process so we don’t over extend people’s expectations of the impact of the Games on our community. Rather than re-create the wheel we hope to simply improve upon it!
What is Winchester doing to prepare for the Games? We are working on beautification projects and hospitality training initiatives for front line employees.
We are working with local businesses to offer discounts and gift bags to those folks staying in Winchester-Clark County. We will weekly concert series, historical tours weekly during the games to attract visitors to our downtown.
Winchester is working with the 15 counties within the Bluegrass Tourism Region to help maximize the benefit of the games on a Regional basis. The Bluegrass Region has so much to offer!
Do you have any big marquee events planned? Local artisans will decorate two dimensional horses that will be displayed throughout the community for “Kickin’ it Up on Mane Street”. The horses will be on display throughout WEG.
We have our annual Scarecrow Festival and Auction t that falls during that time period and the Bluegrass Heritage Museum is planning a Bluegrass & BBQ event that will also coincide with the games.
These are diverse events that should appeal to a variety of spectators pending their interest.
