What’s My City Doing? > Lexington
Welcome to the Horse Capital of the World! Home of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games!
Lexington Prepares for 2010. An interview with Mary Quinn Ramer, VP of Tourism Marketing.
As a tourism professional, how do you describe the opportunity the Games present?
The 2010 Games presents an unprecedented opportunity to build Lexington’s brand as Horse Capital of the World. We have the opportunity to impress thousands of new visitors to the area with an outstanding visitor experience in the Bluegrass, while showcasing our world-class equine attractions.
We also stand to benefit tremendously from the media exposure given to Lexington and the Bluegrass during the 16 days of competition. Journalists from across the country and throughout the world will be in Lexington for the event, which translates into 500 million viewer television audience and even more through traditional print and online coverage, worldwide.
How can your city benefit from this opportunity?

The city of Lexington will benefit in many ways from the 2010 Games. Already, the Kentucky Horse Park is an improved facility that will present many opportunities for hosting events and competitions in the future. The new indoor arena will allow for competition year-round.
In addition, the City is working on many legacy projects to live on after the 2010 Games. Notably, plans are well underway for a Legacy Trail that will connect the Kentucky Horse Park to downtown and be pedestrian friendly.

When did you start your planning?
Planning began as soon as the announcement was made that the Kentucky Horse Park would be the host site of the 2010 Games—in December of 2005!
What is your city doing to prepare for the Games?
There are a number of initiatives in place to help prepare our city for the 2010 Games. The Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau offers hospitality training to interested volunteers and front-line hospitality industry professionals through its Bluegrass Tourism Ambassador Program. The Bureau also will be hosting several satellite visitor centers throughout Lexington during the 16-day competition.
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government has an extensive streetscape, beautification and wayfinding plan in place to enhance the city’s core and make it easier for visitors to get around.
Do you have any big marquee events planned?
The marquee event for the city of Lexington is Spotlight Lexington, which is a 17-day festival in downtown Lexington. More information on Spotlight Lexington can be found here.
